Employment for photographers is expected to grow around 12 percent
from 2008 to 20018, according to 2010-1011 Occupational Outlook
Handbook published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The growing population should increase demand for portrait
photographers and the growth online publications will create more
demand for professional digital images. Freelancers will have more
opportunities to market directly to their customers resulting in more
sales through self employment and a declining need for stock photo
agencies.
The widespread use of digital cameras and declining costs have
encouraged more individuals to enter the photographic field. This
increase in amateur photographers will constrain job growth. A
declining newspaper industry will also reduce demand for news
photographers.
Photographers can expect keen competition because there are many
more people interested in working in the field than there are positions
and more companies are contracting with freelancers instead of hiring
employees. In fact, at more than 50 percent, larger percentage of
photographers are self employed than for most occupations.
Those who are proficient at operating a business and are the most
creative and most likely to land a salaried job or earn a living by
freelancing. Job prospects are enhanced when an individual has a unique
talent or skill, job-related training or related work experience.
